This 1967 Mercury Cougar XR-7 Dan Gurney Special was purchased new from Hernandez Lincoln Mercury Sales in Hayward, California in August 1967 and remained in California through its acquisition by West Coast Classic Cougar. The car has been repainted in Lime Frost Metallic over an Ivy Gold interior, and it is powered by a 289ci V8 with a four-barrel carburetor backed by a C4 automatic transmission. The selling dealer has serviced the brake and ignition systems, performed an oil and filter change, and more as detailed below. This Cougar is now offered in Oregon at no reserve by the selling dealer on behalf of West Coast Classic Cougar with a Marti report, service records, manuals, the original sales order, and a clean California title.
The body reportedly has been repainted in its original Lime Frost Metallic (I), and the black vinyl roof has been re-dyed. The seller notes chips in the finish and waviness visible in the sheetmetal down the sides of the car. Close-up photos of the exterior trim, finish, and Sun-X glass are provided in the gallery below. A Motor Trend Car of the Year decal is present in one of the windows.
A 34-minute walkaround and drive video is viewable above. 14″ steel wheels are fitted with factory covers, and the seller notes that the fitted 215/70 BFGoodrich Control T/A M80 tires probably date from the 1990s. A single-outlet exhaust is fitted, and a new-old-stock muffler is said to have been recently installed.
The cabin is upholstered in Dark Ivy Gold leather (6G) and is equipped with a factory center console, eight-track radio, air conditioning, power steering, and power brakes. Cracking is visible on the driver’s seat cushion, and West Coast Classic Cougar had the driver’s seat re-stuffed with new foam. A video embedded below notes that the green T-handle shifter is unique to 1967 Cougar XR-7s.
Instrumentation is mounted in the faux-wood dash fascia, and the car is equipped with a factory three-spoke steering wheel. Instrumentation includes a 120-mph speedometer and a 6k-rpm tachometer along with a clock mounted in the center stack. Just under 4,900 miles are shown on the five-digit odometer, although true mileage is unknown.
Power is provided by an A-code 289ci V8, which was factory rated at 225 horsepower in Cougar Super 289 trim. The car retains a factory smog pump, and the selling dealer has performed an oil and filter change and also replaced the air-cleaner element, spark plugs, points, and condenser.
Power is sent to the rear wheels via a C4 automatic transmission, which has been serviced with fresh fluid and a new gasket and filter. The seller has also fitted new shocks and serviced the brake system with new wheel cylinders, front hoses, and a fluid flush. Additional photos of the underside are presented in the gallery below.
